Home Playgroups

Playgroups that operate in members’ homes can be informal friendly gatherings.

Some families prefer home based playgroups as it may be easier for their children to play with a small group of children in a home setting.

Playgroup WAAs home-based playgroups are generally smaller, parents may find it easier to get to know each other.

Home playgroups receive the same membership benefits as other playgroups including insurance, mail-outs, support and information from Playgroup WA and opportunities to participate in special activities and events.

Tips for home playgroup

  • Try to keep your group small
  • Decide whether you wish to hold your sessions in one home or rotate them between all the homes on a weekly or fortnightly basis
  • As house rules may differ from one family to another, ask other families to respect your home as you expect your children to
  • Close doors where rooms are "off-limits"
  • If some toys are very special, remove them from the play area
  • Bring out group activities such as building blocks, numerous toy cars, stacking containers, threading equipment, paper and crayons, finger paint and so on
  • Ask each family to bring a toy to be used by your group that week
  • Consider setting up a modest toy collection with contributed toy sets and equipment. This would be transferred each week to where your group is meeting
  • Discuss openly so everyone is clear about what are acceptable or unacceptable behaviours
  • As home groups are small, a playgroup activity could include walking to the park or visiting the local library
  • Everyone should feel comfortable. Keep things simple and remember there is no need to have lavish refreshments or elaborate preparations
  • Agree on start and finish times so everyone can plan their day
  • Encourage everyone to lend a hand when it’s time to tidy up
  • Consider new premises if the group outgrows the home environment
