Playgroup Australia, the national peak body for playgroups, has received funding from the Australian Government to implement the PlayConnect Playgroups program, as one of the components of the $190 million Helping Children With Autism initiative.
PlayConnect Playgroups are being delivered across Australia by Playgroup Australia and in partnership with each State or Territory Playgroup Association. As part of this, Playgroup WA has established playgroups and currently the following playgroups are operating:
- Hillarys
- Mandurah
- South Lakes
- Forrestfield
Any family that has a child aged from 0-6 years who has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or displays ASD-like behaviours (the child does not need a formal ASD diagnosis), is welcome to join a free PlayConnect Playgroup.
One of the aims of the playgroup is to connect families and carers and the sessions allow parents and carers time to share stories, advice and information as well as providing play opportunities that are flexible and tailored to the needs of the children.
Like most other playgroups, PlayConnect playgroups meet weekly for around two hours but are facilitated by a Development Worker. The Development Worker supports the playgroup for between 6 - 24 months and encourages families to be actively involved in the planning and the running of the PlayConnect Playgroup sessions.
