Literacy Links Project

Literacy Links ProjectPlaygroup WA has won the funding for a further year of this exciting project funded through the Communities for Children in the Mirrabooka area.

The Literacy Links Project aims to develop and promote early literacy strategies that assist parents in encouraging early literacy with their own children between the ages of 0-5 years.

Since Playgroup WA took over the project more than 1000 children have received books through the project. There have been shopping centre displays and activities during local events.

Literacy Links has visited family centres and places where parents of young children gather and hold meetings, playgroups, and crèches.

The project has provided books and tips about early literacy. Two conferences for professionals were held this year.

The Let’s Read strand of the project has been provided through child health nurses and the project extends thanks to them for distribution of books and tips to parents of 7-12 month old children.

The Mirrabooka and Girrawheen libraries have Let’s Read book packs aimed at children 18 months -2 years old.

The project has been lucky to attract book donations from both

A big thank you to them both for their generosity.

Further books have been purchased at a discount from Huggies and books purchased at a huge discount from Allen and Unwin. The project would like to extend thanks for this help.

We are looking forward to a new year of workshops and events for both parents and professionals in the area of early literacy strategies and to the pleasure of flooding the community with books and tip sheets.

Early literacy is crucial to our children’s readiness for school and for success in life.

We recently employed a new co-ordinator - Andrea Folkard, who replaces Trish Johnston.

Andrea is based at our Playgroup WA office in North Perth and can be contacted on freecall 1800 171 882, (08) 9228 8088 or via email.

The Literacy Links Project incorporates the Let’s Read and the Better Beginnings programs run by the State Library of Western Australia.
