Standards of ExcellencePlaygroup NSW recognises a number of standards that contribute to a best practice playgroup. The standards are in line with the aims and values of the Association. These standards should be adopted by playgroups and promoted to all members and new members. To achieve best practice a playgroup should follow the guidelines set out below. Standard Guidelines- Create a warm welcome for new members and visitors. Playgroup membership is available to everyone regardless of background, social standing or abilities, ensuring all members and children are accepted unconditionally into your group
- Keep fees and fund-raising to a minimum (so all can afford to join)
- The venue should offer a clean and safe environment in relation to barricades, toys and/or equipment
- Ensure the playgroup has a health policy along with a first aid kit and displayed emergency numbers
- Ensure the playgroup has a policy on supervision/discipline. The playgroup should promote positive parenting techniques
- Ensure the playgroup operates with a committee that keeps up-to-date records and documentation including Day Book, Treasurers’ Handbook, minutes etc
- Involve all members in the day to day running of the Playgroup. This may mean taking on a committee position or setting up for the day’s activities
- Operate the playgroup democratically
- Offer playgroup sessions that cover a wide range of age appropriate activities which include all developmental areas i.e. gross motor, fine motor, speech, social, etc
- Recognise the value of the members and their children and encourage and support their involvement in all facets of playgroup
- Offer members the opportunity to develop new skills by supporting locally run training sessions and workshops
- Create a support system to encourage self confidence, self esteem and equality
- Promote awareness of difference cultures, especially indigenous Australia
