PlayConnect Playgroups usually meet weekly, during school terms for two hours. During playgroup sessions, parents, carers and children participate in a variety of play activities and experiences specifically suited to the needs of children with ASD.
Each week, parents are involved in the sessions by:
- Setting up the play environment
- Being involved in play activities
- Suggesting ideas for activities
- Tidying up time
- Fundraising
- Talking and sharing ideas with other parents
The PlayConnect Playgroup Development Worker supports the PlayConnect Playgroup for between 6- 24 months. During and after this time, the participating families may elect to continue running the playgroup themselves (without the PlayConnect Playgroup Development Worker present), or they may choose to join another community playgroup, early intervention program or early education service.
It is important to note that PlayConnect is NOT a specialist therapeutic provider. However, PlayConnect Development Workers can provide families with information about specialist services for children with ASD in the local area. Families attending PlayConnect Playgroups can also contact Playgroup Australia's ASD Advisor on 1800 790 335 (toll free), to seek answers to questions about children with ASD at playgroup.
