From January 1, 2011, the Australian Government will introduce a Paid Parental Leave scheme which can be claimed by working parents for up to 18 weeks when having or adopting a child.
Playgroup Australia CEO, Karen Merange, said that the scheme will benefit families in more ways than just financially.
“The first years of your child’s life are the most important for both parent and child, and those first months at home together will benefit the both of you,” she said.
“Playgroup Australia advocates parents as a child’s first educator. This scheme can provide opportunities for parents to embrace this role by exploring the world through play in the early months – and beyond.
“Attending playgroup during this time provides a forum for new parents to share ideas with others going through the same experience, and providing a support network that is not always available when parents have to immediately return to the workforce.”
