2012 Playgroup Australia
Media Awards 

Journalists, communicators and photographers are invited to participate in the 2012 Playgroup Media Awards to be presented in October 2012.

The awards were established in 2011 to recognise, reward and encourage media coverage contributing to public awareness and understanding of the broader benefits of Playgroups to families and communities.

  Awards will be offered in two categories:

  • Playgroup Profile - awarded to a journalist(s)/communicator(s)/photographer whose work is assessed as having most effectively communicated the value of Playgroup to the Australian public through traditional or online media.
     
  • Playgroup Pictures - awarded to a photographer whose work captures the essence of Playgroup and illustrates the values of Playgroup in terms of nurturing children, supporting families or building communities.

JUDGING PANEL

The judging panel has been selected to offer an informed and fair judgement of the works submitted. It comprises: 

  • Playgroup Australia CEO;
  • Megan Bisson, Playgroup NSW;
  • Susan Hetherington, a lecturer in journalism at QUT, veteran newspaper journalist and ABC Radio contributor;
  • Tracey Spicer, 2UE broadcaster, News Ltd columnist, Sky News Anchor and travel writer for Holidays with Kids magazine.

Judging criteria will include:

  • Newsworthiness - timely work that adds to or encourages debate on current issues around Playgroups;
  • Effectiveness - work promotes public awareness and understanding of the value of Playgroup ;
  • Impact - work is noteworthy for its positive effect or influence in the community around Playgroups;
  • Accuracy - work demonstrates accurate and balanced presentation of Playgroup events/issues;
  • Creativity - work makes use of innovative methods in news gathering and presentation, including for example interactive media, audio, video, crowdsourcing or alternative modes of distribution; and
  • Quality - work demonstrates quality of research/writing/reporting.

Additional criteria for photographic work may include:

  • Technical excellence;
  • Aesthetics; and
  • Creativity in communicating a story.

NOMINATIONS

Nominations may be submitted by any Australian resident, including self-nominees.   To nominate, complete the online entry form here.

PRESENTATION

A $500 cash prize is offered in each category, to be presented in October 2012.  Flights and accommodation for attendance at the presentation will be included if required.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Awards are open to individuals or groups who are Australian citizen(s) or Australian resident(s) for original works published or broadcast from October 14, 2011.

  • Published works can include broadcast or print media, online content including blogs, books, specialist magazines, photographs, illustrations, or any other communication channel that could be construed as having a public audience.
  • Published works may be an individual or series of works.
  • Applicants who have received any financial or in kind sponsorship or support from any corporation or organisation in relation to their entry (for example - photography commissioned by a State or Territory Playgroup Association) must declare all details and any potential conflict of interest.
  • Current employees of Playgroup Australia or its Members are not eligible to enter. Former employees may not enter work published or broadcast while they were employed by Playgroup Australia or its Members.
  • Entrants must complete a separate entry form for each category/submission.
  • There is no cost to enter the Awards.
  • The judges reserve the right to re-allocate any entry that, in their view, has been entered in the wrong category. The entry will only be judged in the new category.
  • Playgroup Australia reserves the right to use all material submitted for presentation and media use and to reproduce it for the purposes of promoting the Awards.
  • It is the entrant's responsibility to obtain all permissions, including the copyright owner's permission, for material entered into the Awards and its possible use in promotion of the Awards.
  • Entries will not be returned.
