Latest Media Release       25 June 2008

The Rudd Government’s recent announcement to deliver a $190 million package for early intervention support for under school age children with autism, has been viewed as a positive step forward by professionals in the playgroup field.

More details about the Australian Government’s “Helping Children with Autism” initiative were announced today, stating that 150 playgroups would be created specifically for families and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Karen Merange, National Executive Officer of Playgroup Australia said that the proposed expansion of playgroups for children with ASD will go a long way to supporting families.

“Playgroup Australia, and the eight State and Territory Playgroup Associations whom we represent, applaud this announcement, which is family and community focused, and can be rapidly implemented.

“Playgroup Australia has been involved with coordinating a number of playgroups for children with autism and ASD throughout Australia. There have been great outcomes from these for the families involved.

“By bringing together parents for networking and information-sharing, and showing them how to use play-based learning specific to a child with ASD, it’s going to make a big difference to people’s lives.

“We support the Rudd Government’s proposed expansion of playgroups to support the families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

“It is going to help a large number of families cope with this challenging disorder,” she said.
